GC GeoCoder

Enable simple and fast geo-referencing of spreadsheet data using our open-source geocoding engine.

FortiusOne partnered with the US Federal Geographic Data Committee (FGDC) to develop the GC GeoCoder in order to provide users with the capability to put their data on a map. The GeoCoder is integrated into GeoCommons and GeoIQ providing a simple workflow to convert spreadsheets into maps.

For developers, FortiusOne has released the GeoCoder as an open-source project. This means the GC GeoCoder can be integrated into other applications and websites in order to provide fast and easy referencing of data.

What is GeoCoding?

Enormous amounts of data found in spreadsheets and documents contains location information. Often, these locations are missing the essential latitude and longitude needed to place them on a map.

The identification of location of data is called ‘geocoding‘ and involves parsing the address, street, city, state, post code, or other information from general strings of data in order to lookup the location in a database.

While there are many geocoding services available, many have restrictive terms of use and do not allow users to change the data for different countries, placename definitions, or link to other information such as FIPS codes, metro areas, or watersheds. The GC GeoCoder allows users to link their data to locations using an open-algorithm metaphone that analyzes common phonetic spellings to locate more data that has alternate names or may be misspelled.

Get Started

Developers can download the source code or discuss techical issues in our forum.

If you have public data that needs to be geocoded, simply upload it to the GeoCommons community where geocoding is a seamless step in the data management workflow. If you have proprietary data needs, please contact FortiusOne to discuss using GeoIQ within your organization.
